Check list

Check-list of Important Items

We hope that the information we provide below will be useful to you in planning your trip here to Rolla. These are the things that should be done well in advance of your flight.

Medical Check-Up

· Dental (especially, if you have a history of dental problems)

· Eye check-up (if you wear glasses, bring an extra pair)

· TB test.

· Get MMR immunization (it is also administered on campus by the health service).

It might also be helpful if you carry a kit containing some common medicines that you may require.

Clothes and Accessories

The dress sense on campus is pretty casual. You might feel out of place if you come loaded with formal wear. Usually clothes are machine washed and dried; some of them may shrink as a result. So, it might help to get loose fitting clothes.

Recommended Items

· One set of traditional Indian wear

· Shirts and trousers (informal T- shirts and jeans preferable)

· One or two pairs of formal wear

· One or two belts

· Shorts / pajamas (nightwear)

· Bed-sheets and blankets (no pillows necessary, you get them cheap over here)

· 2 good woolen sweaters (most people here wear jackets, which you may purchase on your arrival)

· Thermal underwear

· Raincoats / Umbrellas (Must)

· 8-10 pairs of white cotton and woolen socks

· Undergarments (enough to last two weeks)

· Shoes (1 formal and 1 informal pair)

· 1 pair leather slippers, 1 or 2 pairs of Hawaii slippers with extra straps

· Bath soap, toothbrush, toothpaste etc

Those of you arriving in winter would do well to come prepared with plenty of warm clothing. You may need to purchase a winter jacket and a pair of boots when you arrive here.

Food Stuff

· Masala powders

· Coffee / Tea

· Dal

· Papads

· Pickles

The above mentioned are just a few of the food items you may require when you get here. Besides bring anything else that you feel may be needed in the initial few days. If you are carrying a lot of foodstuff, make sure they are sealed and properly packed. Fresh or previously opened foodstuffs are not allowed to be brought through US customs.

Note: There have been instances when some food items have been confiscated by the agriculture department and department of airport customs at some of the minor airports such as Cincinnati, etc. Please keep this in mind if you decide to load yourself with foodstuff.

Utensils

· Kadai

· Rolling pin

· 1 or 2 plates, tumblers, coffee mugs etc

· Pressure cooker / pan. ( Bring extra gaskets, weights, safety valves and handles.).

· 1 or 2 kitchen knives

· Cutlery

· Small bowls

Note: Match boxes / gas lighters etc. are not required. All stoves are self-lighting.

You will have to make major adjustments to your food habits on getting here. So, learn as much cooking as possible. Most of the powders and condiments are available in India stores in St. Louis. However, they are a bit costly.

WE WISH YOU HAVE A SAFE AND COMFORTABLE JOURNEY!!
